The tunnel that links Wheat Street to Oaston Road, Nuneaton, was officially opened yesterday by Lord-Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Martin Dunne, in front of a crowd of over 80 people representing those who have been involved in the project. Councillor Les Caborn, the Cabinet Portfolio holder for Community Safety also attended the event.
Paul Hooper, Community Safety & Substance Misuse Group Manager said “This project has involved many agencies and individuals working together to make this important walking route safer and more pleasant. The artwork depicts important buildings and people related to Nuneaton so it is a history lesson too.”
Community Safety Project Officer Helen Earp said: “It was great to see so many people, some that had created the artwork along with residents and local people that will use the tunnel daily. Thank you to everyone who contributed to make the transformation in such a tight time-scale – the tunnel really is a visual success.”
