The Campaign for Real Ale, which surveyed 2,000 people about their drinking habits, said the figures suggested that while people were drinking less, it is because they were more adventurous in their choices.

A third of drinkers now opt for a half pint glass when trying a new beer in a pub, compared to 26% who order a pint.
