‘Free’ magazine offer warning

Warwickshire Trading Standards is warning residents to be wary of unexpected phone calls from people offering ‘free’ magazines. The callers appear to know the householder’s name and ask for a delivery address, email details and bank details and request a small authorisation payment. They may also ask to set up a direct debit.

Trading Standards Officers are concerned that the callers may actually by trying to sign the residents up to a magazine subscription, without the resident’s knowledge or agreement.

Trading Standards advise consumers not to purchase goods or services from cold callers, even if they claim the product or service is free.

You can’t be sure who you are speaking to on the phone, so never give out your personal or financial information to cold callers.

Make a scam/rogue trader complaint to Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.
