Social media fraud

Social Media Fraud refers to deceptive activities carried out across social media platforms with the intent to steal personal information, money, or other assets from users interacting with those services. The ways in which these scams can take place are numerous and varied, taking the forms of fake profiles operated across these platforms, phishing schemes, or fraudulent advertisements (often with links to insecure websites).

Examples of some of the ways scams and fraudulent activity can take place on Social Media platforms include:

  • Phishing Scams – scammers send direct messages or emails pretending to be from social media platforms, asking users to click on malicious links to steal their login credentials,
  • Fake Profiles – fraudsters create fake accounts impersonating celebrities, bands, or even friends to gain Trust and solicit money or personal information,
  • Lottery and giveaway Scams – users are told they’ve won a prize but must pay a fee or provide personal information to claim it. The prize doesn’t exist, and the scammer steals the money or information,
  • Investment Scams – fraudsters promote fake investment opportunities, often involving cryptocurrency, promising high returns. Victims invest money, which is then stolen.
