A look back at Safer Streets Round Three
Agencies in Warwickshire secured £249,000 from Round 3 of the Home Office Safer Streets fund. This funding was for projects designed to reduce violence against women and girls and increase women and girls’ feelings of safety in public spaces.
Use of this funding was focused on locations in the county where women and girls told us they feel unsafe and incorporated community feedback to create safer spaces for all. It also funded the development of an education programme looking to raise awareness of misogyny and inappropriate behaviours towards women and girls.
Information from the national StreetSafe reporting portal was incorporated into the development of the Safer Streets project. StreetSafe enables members of the public to anonymously drop a pin onto a map and describe factors that caused them concern, including behavioural or environmental reasons why they felt unsafe.
Safer Streets Round 3 funding had to be spent in targeted locations of the county. It is possible however that further funding will become available and, even if we were unable to respond directly to your concerns through the existing funding, your input will be valuable in helping to inform potential future applications. In addition, local partners are regularly monitoring the data and will consider responses to local issues that are possible outside the Safer Streets project.
Officials from across Warwickshire have launched the two new safety call points in Leamington as part of the Safer Streets campaign, launched in 2021.
New call points were installed on Brunswick Street and Court Street. Two further call points were upgraded in High Street and Clemens Street. The call points, which are easy to operate and manned by the Warwick District Council CCTV operation, are available to anyone to help increase feelings of safety.
Alongside the launch of the call points, the Safer Streets team have also released a short demonstration film to show how the points work in a given scenario.
Safer Streets Round 3 Funding – Nuneaton, Meadow Street
Achievements to date include:
- Purchase of Mobile Camera
- Conversion of Lamp Column
- Removal of Access to Park from Meadow Street
- Installation of Barriers to the Car Park
- Clearing and Maintenance of Vegetation
- Removal of Litter
- Paint Metal Work
Following these changes, 68% of respondents said the improvements in Nuneaton made them feel safer.
